When anchored in the teachings of the Bible, our money can be a magnificent tool that our Heavenly Father intends for us to use wisely in fulfilling our part in advancing His Kingdom, in ministering to the needs of others, and in providing for our own needs. But what does God say about paying taxes?

Nobody likes paying taxes, but everyone enjoys the benefits. Tax revenues are used by the federal, state, and local government to pay for things like military defense, roads, and emergency response teams. This topic was so controversial that it was specifically covered by Jesus in Matthew 17:24-27 and 22:17-22. In that passage Jesus told the people to “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.”

So, as a Christian entrepreneur there really is no question about paying taxes, but more of a question of how much. The answer to that depends on a number of factors, like how many dependents you can claim. Your tax obligations as a business will also heavily depend on the business structure you have in place along with your tax deductions, tax loopholes, and applicable tax credits.

As Christians, shrewd handling of finances may seem like we’re coloring outside of the lines, but Jesus taught, particularly through his frequent illustrations of stewards (Matthew 25:14-30; Luke 16:1-13) and farming (Matthew 13:8, 23; John 4:34-38), that it is appropriate, and even expected by the Lord, to invest our resources for long-term gain and/or financial security. If you think that concept is astonishing, then watch the video below about 3 Surprising Things Jesus Said About Money.
